Michael Polk on Transformation Inside His Double Down Strategy at Implus

After nearly four decades in consumer goods, Michael Polk Newell Brands might have chosen a quieter second act. Instead, he joined Berkshire Partners as an advisory director and took the helm of Implus LLC as CEO, tasking himself with a full operational turnaround he has described as the ‘double down’ strategy.

The assignment came in early 2020, just as the global pandemic complicated virtually every business plan on the planet. Polk and his team pressed ahead anyway, drawing on methods he refined across his years at Kraft Foods, Unilever, and Newell Rubbermaid. The approach involved reshaping Implus‘s portfolio, introducing new ways of working, defining a set of core beliefs for the corporate culture, and assembling a new leadership team capable of executing the plan.

A Pattern of Operational Change

Michael Polk has followed a consistent pattern throughout his career: enter a complex organization, diagnose its structural problems, and build toward scale through both organic growth and targeted acquisitions. At Newell Rubbermaid, where he served as CEO from 2011 to 2019, he completed 35 transactions and grew the company from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion in net sales. E-commerce grew from 9% to more than 20% of global business during that period. Project Renewal unlocked over $500 million in savings.

That record gave Polk a detailed framework for the Implus work. While the company’s specific financial results remain private due to its ownership structure, Polk has noted that both ownership and management are pleased with progress made.

Shaped by a First-Generation Background

Polk has credited his upbringing as the child of first-generation American parents with instilling the work ethic that has defined his career. He began at Procter & Gamble on a factory floor in Pennsylvania, worked his way through an MBA at Harvard Business School, and built his executive credentials across four decades and multiple blue-chip companies. Each chapter, he has said, helped him grow as a leader and a person. Refer to this article to learn more.
